All your base are belong to bulldozer

Let me get this straight: closing U.S. military facilities in several states will save us $50bn over a period of ten years, but we’re spending $160bn in ’special’ appropriations every year in Iraq. Also, if Republicans can so freely give Reagan credit for ending the cold war, then doesn’t he really deserve the blame for the past decade’s worth of base closings? If it weren’t for him ‘ending’ the cold war, we’d still have a ‘need’ for those bases, wouldn’t we? And what about those lost jobs when the bases closed up shop? Will some new form of math be invented to make those job loss numbers disappear? Will the media be allowed to report on the human toll? Will they be allowed to photograph boarded up base buildings, lined up in rows like coffins returning from the field? Or is this, too, verboten now?

  1. I heard an interesting spin about the base closings. Many of them are located in prime real estate areas and are furiously being bid on. Renovation of the base could bring back some of the lost jobs. Of course, not all of the bases are convertable.
