Mario 3D

Mario in 3D is still not as good as Mario in 2D. I hated Super Mario 64, I especially hated Super Mario Sunshine, and I’m working up a healthy loathing for Super Mario Galaxy.

I loved Super Mario RPG and Super Paper Mario. I loved Super Mario World, and the sequel, Yoshi’s Island. All of these games were brilliant.

None of these games made me sit through several FMV sequences interspersed with moving two inches on screen to even get started. Nor did they make me go through the same sequence to get to the second boss fight, including non-skippable video sequences. Also, what gives with the use of FMV in the game? Can’t the Wii handle real-time graphics?

Also, the whole star shines collection aspect of the game with the Wiimote and the shaking of the Wiimote or nun-chuck is only there because it’s like a federal law or something. Sometimes the Wiimote is a logical choice for the game (like those where you have to shoot things — Zelda, etc.) but I’d rather just jump on things like the old days. Of course, that’s sorta hard when you have to line up your jumps in 3d or else get hurt.

There’s a reason people are fans of Knytt and other 2D platformers. There’s still compelling work to be done in the space.
