Martin Street Last Night

I hit the club at about 10PM and didn’t leave until 4AM. I spent almost all my time downstairs because the upstairs was playing house and attracting a decidedly fraternity/sorority crowd. So it was a night of bone-crunching Drum n Bass, and that’s not all bad.

What surprises me is that the two clubs that act as venues to most DnB shows don’t really have sound systems. Almost everything is supplied by the throwing crew. Unfortunately, permanent professionally tuned systems are less likely to cause high-frequency hearing loss like that which I am experiencing currently. It will pass with the weekend, but it is a straight-up bitch to deal with.

My co-worker and boy(ee?) Steve, A.K.A. Headchange stepped up to the decks in the last slot and took the party out. It is an unfortunate time slot, almost worse than the dreaded first slot:

  1. alcohol goes off-sale at 2AM
  2. half the room is tired, including said DJ
  3. everyone gets booted at the end of the set by the bouncer

He had to contend with the aforementioned extreme treble, problems with the monitor, and a burnt-out groove light on one of the SL-1200s. The good news is he brought some new stuff in to spin, and that piqued people’s interest.

The other good news is that The Grooverider had a show down at The Office a few blocks away, and came down to hang out after his show. He spent all of 10 minutes in the house room, and the rest of the night (2-3:30) in the DnB room.

And that’s the way it should be.
