I took steps to simplify my living room, including clearing the mantle (middle English for ‘holds clutter’) and simplfying my television area:
Gone: Nintendo Wii (anyone want to buy a Wii?), Harman|Kardon AVR120 receiver, Bose Lifestyle 10 Series II speaker set. That’s right, no more surround, and two inputs: HD PVR, and XBox 360, which is also my DVD player. Both in stereo. I know, bold. We only have two ears anyway.

Bring the Wii back and replace both the PVR and the XBox 360 with a MythTV box. Then you’ll have a fun game system/internet browser and a PVR/DVD Player/everything else system, instead of a M$ donation and a Cable Co money pit!
If you’re going to minimize your technology, eliminate the least adaptable / expandable items. Especially if they have recurring costs!
I suppose I could do that with my mac mini. I don’t happen to care much for the Wii, and I don’t really play it; the only good games on it are Nintendo-made right now.
DVD player software on Linux is generally horrible, and tend to drop lines of resolution resulting in moire effect. This is not good at all. While I’d love to be able to rip my DVDs to disk and all that, I don’t really see all of the pain involved with getting it up and running. The 360 is a good machine that’s well supported by my remote and it lets me play plenty of high-resolution, high-quality games.
As for the “M$ donation” bit, that’s just lame and juvenile. The 360 is the only piece of non-Apple hardware in my house.
That DVR looks familiar. The Scientific Atlanta 8300, mayhaps?
I love having a simplified TV setup. I want to get rid of my speakers, but I love having big bass when I’m watching a movie. And the speakers require the amp, etc. It snowballs. At least I’ve gotten my game systems down to PS2 and Wii.
I think it’s an 8500. I can never remember numbers :/ I’m putting the Wii back in and using my Audio Authority 1154A which can automatically switch between multiple sources and stay out of sight!
